Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV confirmed

Alfa Romeo have announced today that the SUV they’ve been busily working on will be called Stelvio, named after the famously curvy pass through the Alps in Northern Italy. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne has said the company will finally put the often-postponed SUV on sale in Europe in early 2017,

The Stelvio will use a modified version of the Giulia platform, and the two models will most likely share powertrains. This will mean the standard version will probably receive a 206kW (276hp) 2.0L turbo-charged 4-cylinder. Thanks to the shared Giulia platform and common parts, Alfa Romeo could also introduce a 377kW (505hp) Quadrifoglio version, powered by a 2.9L twin-turbo V6.

Alfa Romeo hasn’t officially released photos or renders of the Stelvio’s design yet, but you can expect a lot of styling cues from the Giulia sedan to be incorporated into the bodywork. With that in mind, independent artist Remco Meulendijk created a pair of renderings (both above) that offer a convincing look at what the final vehicle might look like.

Alfa Romeo hasn’t had much luck with launching new vehicles recently, and the Giulia sedan and Stelvio should have been ready by now. The sedan was supposed to arrive in late 2015, but Marchionne has said assembly would finally begin on March 14. The sedan allegedly had problems passing internal crash tests, but Alfa officials have vehemently denied this.
