Pick-up trucks are a fundamental part of Mitsubishi Motors and the current L200 has won more awards than any of its rivals put together. Since its UK launch back in 2006, the current L200 has out sold all other pick-ups too, accounting for over 4.1 million vehicles made to date, which in my eyes makes them pretty good at building a very good pick-up truck.
Engine: 2.4 litre high power diesel engine that produces (178bhp) / 3500 rpm and 430 Nm @2500 rpm which delivers impressive and responsive performance in all situations, such as when fully occupied with all my family, but also for a long-distance trip with a full load of camping gear along with my children and their bikes plus all sorts of other gear you could possibly want to cram in.
Also, I was really impressed with the fuel return of the L200. I did not go out to even try to get the best I could and to my amazement the L200 returned a decent 37.9mpg.
On the road: The all-new L200 Series 5 can carry and tow a combined 4,090 tonnes. That is staggering to be honest. Even when you are fully loaded, it feels like you are just carrying the family’s weekly shopping.
Ride comfort is also brilliant and the L200 also has outstanding leg room making it very comfortable for the rear passengers. I have to add that I loved the renowned Mitsubishi 4WD system. The Super Select 4WD-II system can switch between four modes, including full-time 4WD and is also able to switch between 2WD and 4WD on the move.
Inside: The level of equipment specification on most models is also outstanding. The list of equipment starts with; ABS with EBD, 7 airbags, Multi-info display, Traction & stability control, Hill start assist, Trailer stability assist, Remote keyless entry. Plus in Barbarian spec, you also get extra additions like; Premium leather, LED mood lighting and Puddle lamps.
Safety: Active Stability and Traction Control with Brake Assist operates in both on and off-road situations to ensure you have maximum grip no matter what the driving conditions are. You also get Mitsubishi’s Anti-Lock Braking System with (EBD) which adjusts the level of braking power applied, depending upon the load.
To sum up: If you are a Builder, a Farmer or even the man who just wants to move stuff around along with his family – then L200 is a pick-up that you will enjoy driving. The L200 is in essence a workhorse utility with car-like refinement.
