New Top Gear trailer goes down in flames after damning fan reviews

The recently released trailer for the new series of Top Gear has been given a ‘thumbs down’ by the overwhelming majority of fans, with some saying it should have been called ‘clowns in a car’.

So far more than 53,000 people have down-voted the trailer on YouTube, with many bemoaning the Americanisation of the show and how the new presenters – Chris Evans, Matt LeBlanc and Sabine Schmitz – don’t seem to be anywhere near as funny as Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. One of the many critical comments said: “I’d rather poke my eyes out with a rusty fork than watch the new Top Gear 2016,” while another fan wrote “Looks like clowns in a car trying hard to be funny, or this is the way to mess up one of the best shows ever.”

Many of the comments urged the BBC to bring back the former star of the show, Jeremy Clarkson, but in reality there’s a higher chance of hell freezing over before that would ever happen. Fans have branded Chris Evans a poor replacement for Clarkson, claiming the humour shown in the trailer appears to be scripted. Other fans have said that they’ll boycott the series and instead watch Clarkson’s new Amazon Prime when it launches later in the year.

Despite the overwhelming amount of negative comments on you the YouTube video, the BBC still remains optimistic about Top Gear’s chances. A spokesperson for the BBC said “The Top Gear trailer has received almost 5m views already and we are delighted that so many people have shown an interest in the new show.”

The 60-second trailer showed an array of supercars and classic cars, from the McLaren 675LT to the Ferrari F12 TDF and a three-wheeled Reliant Rialto. If by chance you haven’t seen it yet, , check it out below and let us know what you think.

Chris Evans is a rather weird looking fellow – rather like a starved school boy ! The show likewise is purile !

it’s not bad trailer to be honest..I would say it’s even quite good
but I’m afraid the show will not live up to that

I love the oldies but I’m happy to give the newbies a go too. Really like Matt and it will be refreshing to have Sabine on the show. Some of the situations on film look a bit familiar, but I guess they will do more original films as they go along. Room for all!

I´m really looking forward to see Matt leblanc on the show. It´s the only reason i´ll keep watching top gear, i´m not familiar with any of the new presenters. But as a fan of Clarkson, hammond and may, I can only hope that this competition will give both shows a reason improve their quality .and to be inovative People shouldn´t expect top gear to fail, we have to cheer they succeed!

Out of the entire trailer the bit I liked the most was LeBlanc in his Robin on the back of the truck, so yes, I’d agree.

I just don’t understand who the BBC are making this programme for.
I mean it would be a bit like me walking into my bank and saying I’d like to set up a chain restaurant selling burgers and fries, maybe milkshakes, chicken nuggets, and then sell it with various soft drinks. I’d also like to have people driving past the restaurant in their cars ordering through the window. It would have an instantly recognisable logo. And maybe a clown as a mascot. We could even do a range of breakfast products or coffees.
It’s needlessly derivative. They’re trying to be like Clarkson, Hammond and May, except without the charm, wit, humour, edge, history, controversy, occasional moments of genuine friendship and human emotion, experience, authority or cache.
Meanwhile I hear such a programme will be appearing on Amazon.

Recall what the old hosts were like early on?? They were BRUTAL ! Frankly, near the end, I could barely stand Clarkson.
I am looking forward to the new show.

Sean
I notice the voting at the particular time I was at the you tube site that around 12,000 thought it was good, some 59,000 thought it the work of satan and 2,000,000+ couldnt be bothered to make any comment at all,pro or con.
presumably the majority would watch the show when it comes out?

There’s still a lot of people who haven’t forgiven the BBC for firing Clarkson (even though blaming them is completely unreasonable considering he did punch someone) and while it has simmered down a bit, it’s probably something Top Gear will face for another few years yet.

I like it. I’m sick of the condescending attitude and snickering remarks of the previous hosts. It’s time for change and goofy or not, they’re on it.

Frankly, there is no replacing Jeremy. The first American version of Top Gear was a dismal failure. This newer version is very likely the same. BBC doesn’t understand it’s about the uniquely British presenters that really drives this show.

I have high hopes for both of these shows however I wish evans wasnt doing another show as well.
the guy must be tired eh?
the trailer was a trailer.
I doubt the bbc would fund a show that they didnt think had a fighting chance.

my enjoyment of the show was mostly based on the interaction of the characters, the cars were secondary. And on that bombshell, the slow death spiral begins!

50% of down votes are butthurt fanboys
30% Are sheeple who want to follow the heard
and the other 20% are probably people who genuinely didn’t like it

Because for us in the uk Amazon prime costs £79 a year I’m sure that the new Amazon show will probably the most illegally downloaded programme in the world. So topgear will still get more viewers for that reason . If both were free we know exactly who would win the ratings war.

I think we the viewers are lucky to have Two Car shows competing for our attention,

I think it’s a bonus for all,

I will watch it and if I do not like it (which I highly doubt) I will not watch again simple.

Bring on both the shows I say and while your at it, bring back Fifth Gear too………..

I understand the presenters are new. However it is still backed by the Top gear production team (may be except the editor) they very good in making a car video looks absolutely beautiful (with excellent background musics etc)
