Top Gear to abandon ‘£500,000 filming trip’ after stars and crew left stranded in Moscow

The Top Gear team were forced to abandon a big-budget trip over the weekend, which is thought to have cost £500,000. Three of the new presenters – Rory Reid, Sabine Schmitz and Eddie Jordan – plus 40 crew members were all left stranded trying to make their way to Kazakhstan to film a new segment for the new series.

The team ended up getting stuck in Moscow, after all flights to the former Soviet republic were grounded. They were then forced to abort the trip return back to the United Kingdom, after the airline stopped the flights due to a disagreement over schedules, reports The Sun.

Top Gear’s infamous insider told the newspaper: “It was a monumental cock-up and really expensive,” he said. “The Top Gear team had all the correct visas. The issue was a row between Aeroflot and Kazakhstan. Everyone on the flight was told to get off.”

The insider added that Top Gear has insurance to cover such situations, and the BBC has released a statement saying it wasn’t the fault of the team or the three presenters.

“Through no fault of the Top Gear team, the airline carrying them was not permitted to fly from Moscow to Kazakhstan so they returned to London,” the BBC said. “They intend to visit Kazakhstan in the future to shoot the planned film there. The BBC will be looking to recoup the cost of the flights.”
