Hypercar ‘holy trinity’ track battle

We’ve had word from Top Gear that a track battle between the McLaren P1, Porsche 918 and Ferrari LaFerrari is currently being organised and will take place in the spring – but not on the track you might expect.

Andy Wilman, executive producer of Top Gear, said that Ferrari and McLaren were the most fiercely competitive, and were still discussing exactly where and how their cars would be tested. “That’s your Foreman and Ali,” he said. Porsche, whose 918 is the cheapest of the three at a mere £625,000, may assume that its car’s four-wheel-drive system will give it an advantage on any track.

The three cars — dubbed the holy trinity — are likely to race at the site of previous closely fought motorsport battles in mainland Europe: Monza in Italy or Imola in the republic of San Marino. The Paul Ricard circuit in France is another possibility. Dry weather is crucial for the test.

Excuse me? What relevance does Monza, Imola or San Marino have to Top Gear?

I don’t really give a toss about which car is fastest around those circuits as it means little to Top Gear.

Over the past 13 years we’ve seen the best cars in the world lapped and compared on the Top Gear Test Track and it has become a benchmark test of how well a car performs. Apparently Ferrari and McLaren are worried about their RWD cars being slower around it when compared to the 4WD Porsche 918. Well news flash guys – the current fastest car on the Top Gear power lap board is the RWD Pagani Huayra. There’s simply no valid reason as to why these three cars shouldn’t be tested.

I’m sorry but this drives me up the wall. In my opinion, if a manufacturer doesn’t want their car lapped on the Top Gear test track then don’t lap the ruddy thing. Porsche have already agreed – so send the 918 around and put it at the top of the board where it’ll most likely end up. If the others don’t want their cars on the board then good riddance as far as I’m concerned.

To add insult to injury, this track test will also not be shown in Top Gear Series 22 – so you’ll also have to wait even longer to find out the pointless result. I really couldn’t care less.

This is how I see this nonsense.
We see cars as a means of enjoyment and satisfaction, but the producers of those same cars now make them for profit.
Therefore, any defeat of the main competitors is bad publicity and so make up stories and nonsense.
The car not only performance and their purpose is to be driven, so …. Ferrari and Mclaren….. let people take to drive this cars.
Regards 🙂

Shame. I was really looking forwar to Jennifer Clarkson this series since my fav of the three is the porsche. I really don’t understand why Ferrari and McLaren don’t want to show off their cars at the Top Gear track. Every other car has been there including cars from Ferrari and McLaren so this makes no sense at all.

Respect to Porsche. Put the 918 round the track and on the board for all the world to see it in all its magnificence.

F**k Ferrari and F**k McLaren. Grow a pair indeed.

The last truly great car to come out of McLaren was the F1, which also happens to be the best car ever. I’m really disappointed with the P1.

Honestly, I don’t even give a crap about these times anymore. All 3 are rubbish, end of. They might as well test which is quicker to the supermarket and back if it’s not the TG test rack.
