Jeremy Clarkson is glad he left Top Gear before it got ‘tired and boring’

Former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson has said he is glad that he left Top Gear before it became “tired and boring”. While speaking at a talk in London last night, Clarkson also admitted that he still makes money from Top Gear every time the BBC recommissions it, and thus denied claims that he had been trying to sabotage the work of new host Chris Evans.

The Sun reported that at the talk at the China Exchange, Clarkson said: “To be honest, I think we would have stayed at the BBC and then the show would have got tired and boring, eventually we would have piloted it into a hillside and that would have been the end.”

He went on to say that leaving the BBC has forced him, along with co-hosts James May and Richard Hammond, to reinvent themselves. “Now we’re looking at losing Top Gear as a fantastic thing to happen,” he said.

Clarkson also denied accusations that he had been making life difficult for new Top Gear host Chris Evans. “What’s very entertaining is that Chris Evans is having a very hard time at the moment as he attempts to put Top Gear back together again. It’s been suggested that I am behind it, that I am trying to scupper him. But I discovered the other day that every time it gets recommissioned I get paid, so that’s a curious bit of BBC contract but I wish them all the very best.”

As much as I hate to say it I thought TG was getting ‘tired’ at around about S21/22 I was kind getting the feeling that they had sold out and had gone way too mainstream.
