Top Gear Series 24 start date revealed

A promotional shot and air date for the next series of Top Gear has been revealed by the BBC today. It’s official – Top Gear Series 24 will commence Sunday 5th March on BBC Two. Not enough to make you feel excited?

Well on the plus side, the show will revert to the tried-and-tested three presenter lineup, featuring Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris and Rory Reid. This is good news, as these three hosts in particular were undoubtedly the strongest aspect of Series 23 – and while the universally unpopular Chris Evans has already been given the boot, it is uncertain at this stage whether Sabine Schmitz or Eddie Jordan will return to the show in any capacity.

The promotional photo released by the BBC (top of page) is worlds away from what last years show looked like (above), which saw Chris Evans as the focal point with 5 other presenters along for the ride. It will be the second series of Top Gear since the departure of Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May – and from what we’ve seen so far it looks like the BBC are attempting to replicate their success and are going back to the tried and tested formula of having three presenters.

Today’s announcement comes just weeks after the first Series 24 preview trailer was released, which showed LeBlanc rescuing naked ramblers on the Isle of Man. But the trailer has received mixed reviews from fans, with many questioning why Harris and Reid are still part of the show. Regardless, the BBC are hoping to receive higher viewing figures after the show suffered its lowest audience ratings in 13 years.

According to the BBC, viewers can expect “Drifting a 1,036bhp Ferrari FXX K, a race across the Kazakhstan wilderness, and of course, the new, twin-turbo V12-engined Aston Martin DB11.”

But there’s no escaping the fact that The Grand Tour has cast a mighty large shadow over what was formerly the world’s biggest motoring show – a shadow from which it might never escape.

What!?! No Muslim Lesbian Female presenters*? How can the BBC lack such diversity! Outrage! More Outrage! …. (really, it is nice to see them trying presenters who might do a good job rather than checking boxes)

Will there still be an extra gear ? If there is surely Eddie and Sabine can present it if they are still around
