The true cost of The Grand Tour’s first series

Details relating to Amazon’s spend for The Grand Tour’s first series have been released. Jeremy Clarkson, James May, Richard Hammond and Andy Wilman were given £35.8million to make the 13 episode series, according to the accounts from their company Chump Holdings Limited. So how was the money spent?

Well according to the figures, the boys were paid £3.75million between them for “presenting services” and one of the company’s directors, most likely Andy Wilman, was paid £1.3million. The company reported a profit of £6.7million and paid £1.7million in corporation tax.

By using basic mathematics and subtracting the profit and the tax figures from the overall budget, it means The Grand Tour team spent £27.4million on the 13 episode run – or about £2.1million per episode.

Aside from the cost of Clarkson, Hammond and May’s presenting services, a total of 28 staff were paid £3.3million between them, which works out an average salary of £118,000. Not bad considering they’re working on arguably the biggest motoring show in the world!

The accounts, which cover the period October 2015 to the end of December 2016 and signed by James May, said: “The Group’s profit for the financial period was £6.7 million. The profit was driven by television programming produced during the period ended 31 December 2016.

“The directors are keen to continue focussing on quality programming whilst ensuring that the company’s overheads are kept stable.”
