Amazon joke about replacing Jeremy Clarkson on The Grand Tour

Jeremy Clarkson is still recovering from a severe bout of pneumonia after being admitted to hospital while on holiday in Spain earlier this month.

The illness was so severe that the extended recovery time required could delay filming for the second season of The Grand Tour, but luckily Amazon have backup plans in place.

The first part of the backup plan involves The Grand Tour’s tent – which might not be touring at all this year. If Clarkson isn’t healthy enough to travel and film studio segments abroad, plans have been put in place for the tent to be set up in Chipping Norton – which is his home turf. And now a mock job advertisement has appeared on Amazon advertising a temporary TV hosting job ‘to cover  presenter’s absence due to ill health.’

While Clarkson isn’t named in the advert, the job criteria offer a few none-too-subtle clues. “The successful applicant will be required to wear vast amounts of pre-washed denim (attire provided in sizes that are slightly too small).”

Applicants are expected to have a “strong knowledge of cars, metaphors and progressive rock music”, and must be ready to take on “duties including (but not limited to) accidentally setting things on fire, handling heavy machinery (badly) and being able to bloody-mindedly argue a point that no one will ever agree.”

If you are interested in applying, basic qualifications for the role include having a “valid driver’s license, British English including advanced qualification in exaggeration and braggadocio, and at least 6.5+ million followers on Twitter or similar social media network.”

No doubt this is all a joke of course. But none-the-less a joke which could turn out to be true if Clarkson isn’t able to recover in time. Who knows – Hammond and May might jump at the chance to work with someone else for a change.
