Chris Evans’s wife helping him battle demons after Top Gear

Chris Evans’s wife is helping him battle his demons as he buries the car crash of Top Gear – and builds towards a big TV comeback. Sports psychology expert Natasha is using her skills to help him through the “mental torture” of recent months. The star ’s torment has included Top Gear backfiring, being at the centre of a police probe over historical sex abuse claims, worries over illness and losing his Radio 2 listeners in droves. Now a pal has revealed he has turned to “pillar of strength” third wife Natasha, 36, who advises golfers on the mental side of the game.

A source revealed: “By his own admission Chris has gone through a total nightmare these past months and Natasha has helped him cope.”

TV bosses are keen to let Evans, 50, know he is still part of the BBC family and they hope to develop new ideas with him “as soon as he is ready.” He was in talks about developing a new peak-time Saturday night family entertainment show before he joined Top Gear. But the project was put on hold while he worked on the car programme – where he reportedly clashed with co-host Matt LeBlanc and the rest of the team. The revival of TFI Friday on Channel 4 was also held off. Now BBC execs including content director Charlotte Moore, a huge fan of Evans, want to revive the idea.

But Natasha, who Evans calls Tash, is believed to want him to fully recover from his ordeal first. Friends claimed she was not keen on his taking the Top Gear job in the first place but he ignored her advice. A pal said of Tash, who worked as Golf Punk magazine’s “golf nurse” dishing out advice, said: “She is a very calming influence on Chris. Her support has been hugely important in helping him get the Top Gear monkey off his back. “She thinks the best way Chris can recover is by spending time with his family and recharging his batteries.”

Evans and Tash, who have two young sons, married nine years ago after meeting at a celebrity golf event.

A BBC spokesman said: “There are no current plans, or talks, with Chris.”
